Did you start your diet to end all diets today? Did you get all of your new workout gear all matching so that you’ll be ready to face the gym in style to fill your New Year’s resolution? Or were you like me and at 10:45 freshly showered and in your most comfortable shoes were you scouring the racks of Dillard’s for their Annual New Year’s Day sale? Whatever you did today, I hope you had the chance to sit and reflect on 2016 as a whole.
This year was a big one for me.
I lost myself and who I was, and then I found myself again. I decided to study abroad this coming summer and got accepted last week (stay tuned in 2017 for details.) I found out what true friendship is and learned not to expect anything less. I started dating the most incredible guy that I wonder how I got so lucky every single day, and I was able to experience harvesting my first buck with him which is something that I will remember forever. I actually went through with my last New Year’s resolution and lost some of the freshman 13 that I had gained. I joined two boards on campus and I was elected the Rose (sweetheart) for the Kappa Alpha Order fraternity that my brother, father, and uncle were members of, and my mom was a little sister. (Talk about a family affair.) I went out on a limb and lived by myself for 3 months, took an internship that wasn’t with my dad for the first time ever and was exposed to restaurant marketing and all Slim Chickens has to offer. (I’m a very brand loyal fan now after meeting the faces behind the chicken.) I rode a bike for the first time in 13 years after being in a terrifying accident when I was 7. I turned 20 and got to explore Austin, TX with my best friend. (Which you can read all about here.) I was able to indulge in my love for concerts and saw 21 Pilots, Kenny Chesney, Chris Stapleton, the Lumineers, Whiskey Myers, Turnpike Troubadours, Randy Rogers Band, LANY, I went to an Aquapalooza, and I’m sure I forgot one but yall get it I spend money on concerts.
All in all 2016, although bumpy politically and economically on this Earth, was not so bad for me and to be honest I wouldn’t want it any other way. But now on to 2017, and all that it has to offer hopefully for me it includes more love, support, and gratitude than the years before. As for my 2017 resolutions, I am praying that our leaders have guidance and humility while cleaning up the mess left by 2016. As for me I’m adopting Matthew McConaughey’s way of living, my hero is always 10 years away and that is what I will always be striving to be the best version of myself, my own hero.
