The other day, some friends and I went cliff jumping in West Fork. I wanted to be spontaneous and, well, that is just what I got. Anyone that knows me is very aware that heights and moving things underneath me are not activities I get super excited about. But, yesterday I threw it all out the window and decided I was going to live life to the fullest. We got to the place, the water was freezing, and to get to the cliff to jump off, you had to first climb up to it. So, after about thirty minutes of adjusting to the temperature of the water, and convincing myself I wasn’t going to die, I swam over and started to climb. I finally reached the top, and there were a bunch of kids up there so scared I could have sworn they were going to wet their pants, but after trying to convince them to jump for ten minutes I decided okay I’m going to jump, and let me tell you jump I did. Without thinking I ran and jumped and went bottom first into the water….. Not my finest moment. But the moral of the story is I did it and after I came up out of the water I realized that cliff jumping isn’t so scary after all, but it does hurt if you don’t go feet first.
Cliff jumping is really similar to how most of us trust God. Sometimes when God is telling us to do something we ease into it and get familiar with the idea until it feels comfortable. Then, when we think that it doesn’t seem so bad, we start to do the necessary actions, aka climbing a rock wall, so that we can do what He is telling us to do. Then after that, we sometimes sit around and convince other people to trust God fully when we can’t even do it ourselves. But in the end, we jump. We as Christians need to stop looking at this as wholeheartedly trusting God and following Him. That is not what that looks like. Trusting God with our whole heart is getting in the water, swimming to the rock wall, climbing it to the cliff, and then jumping without hesitation.
Yes, the way I went about cliff jumping yesterday was the right way to handle it. It is better safe than sorry, but as for trusting in God and the direction He is pointing your life not so much. The next time you feel that He is calling you to do something don’t hesitate, just jump.
