Moving can be a huge hassle! Actually, I won’t lie to you. It IS a huge hassle, but it doesn’t have to be unbearable. I have moved 8 times over the last 4 years…. #collegeproblems and I am about to move for the 9th time in the next week or so!
Needless to say, I have basically gotten it down to a science so I wanted to share some tips and tricks that I have discovered along the way!
Use the things you already have.
Most people think that they have to go buy a ton of boxes to pack everything in. They pack their suitcases and travel bags in them too. DON’T! Bags are meant to be packed in and you can normally fit most of the folded clothes that you have in your dresser in the bags. Another thing that people forget is that trash cans can hold lots of things that are odds and ends. Laundry baskets are the same way. I usually pack linens in my laundry basket to save money on boxes.
LABEL. LABEL. LABEL.
I know it sounds simple, but it is easy to forget to do. Most people label what room it goes in. I take it a step further. I label the box letting everyone know what room it goes in and if it is fragile. The other thing that I put on the box is what is actually in it. It is convenient to know that everything belongs in the kitchen, but it is great to know if it is Christmas kitchen stuff or if it is everyday kitchen stuff. Some things you won’t want to unpack so it is great to be able to identify that and not even open the box.
Bubble wrap is your best friend.
I think this goes without saying, but bubble wrap is one of the best inventions ever. Besides being cheap entertainment for kids, it is great when packing up fragile items. Most of the time when I am packing fragile items I will wrap them in a packing paper sheet, then if I think it is necessary I will double up and use bubble wrap too.
Stop Grocery Shopping.
Wasting food is a nightmare, so don’t. Try to plan your meals and leftovers so that you won’t have all kinds of food going to waste. This goes for pantry items too. You should regularly go through your pantry and donate anything that you haven’t used your canned goods in the last 4 months to the local food pantry. If you aren’t going to eat it, then give it to someone that will.
Some of these things are obvious, but you would be shocked at the people that are completely lost when it comes to moving. Have any other good tips for moving that you want to share? Leave it in the comments below!
